As part of this project, in a group of 5 students: Alfred Lee, Chans Jasmine, Lim Shu Yin, Liong Lee Yee and me were to select 2 precedents for analysis, could be local, national/international. We had chosen Philips Exeter Academy's Library, New Hampshire to be the contemporary (concentric) and Buffalo State Insane Asylum, New York to be the pre-modern movement (linear).
Upon the completion of this project, we managed to analyse and identify the spatial typologies and spatial poetics for each of the building.
SPATIAL TYPOLOGIES:
- Explained and presented how the spaces are organised and ordered.
- Explained how the typologies ordered the use of the design.
SPATIAL POETICS:
- Presented the design considerations employed in the exploration of spatial poetry and experience.
- Explained how the spaces articulated in terms of the poetics, sensuality and tactility of architectural spaces. Eg: flow of experience (circulation of journey), engagement with senses, manipulation of lights & effect on space (natural artificial), texture and materiality, scsale and proportion of spaces., etc.
- Identified plan-section relationship. Eg: inside & outside, volumes and scale of spaces, variation and hierachy of spaces.
A lot of studies and research had been made upon completing these precedents. Hence, lifelong learning skill has strongly been instilled through this project. At most time, I learnt how to learn indepently, both before and after tutorial sessions. Beyond that, I am able to locate, extract, synthesise and utilise information more effectively after gone through times of times of precedent studies and analysis. Most importantly, I am trained to be intellectually engaged more, rather than waiting and expecting for spoon-feeding from the tutors.
