PRE-PROJECT 2A | SITE VISIT TO PENANG
This project required pair work, which form a group of two. I have paired with Chan Jasmine, one of my best buddies amongst all. A very cheerful, bright and clever girl. Been in a memorable time collaborated with her in this project, yet for the very first time of cooperating.
Ahead of starting the project schedules, a profound experience had been gone through via the site visit. A site visit to Penang, again be held for the second time this year. However, the location to be case-studied was different, which is Penang National Park (Pantai Keracut). We had been there for 4 days 3 nights, along with our studio lecturers - Mr Kid, Mr Hong, Mr Edward, My Bryan, Mr Dicson, Mr Peng Wei and Mr Caleb.
Day 1:
Departed from Taylors University Lakeside Campus at 8am, 3 buses with approximately 120 students from us.
The very first activity carried out after our lunch, which was to visit to Botanical Garden, Georgetown, Penang. We needed to study the nature, find inspirations from the nature, which would then help in delevoping ideas in our projects-to-be-done.
Day 2:
Jungle trekking day!
It was really the first-time-experience for me. Words for me to describe the journey --- TOUGH, TIRING, OBSTACLES >>> yet, it is FUN and about learning!
We were brought to carry out jungle trekking in compliance with the task to case-study the site for our projects-to-be-done. Along the way of jungle trekking, we were required to experience the environment, the spaces, the nature, study the climate, the habitance, the creatures, living things, non-living things, etc.
For the very first time of my jungle trekking experience, despite was completely exhausted, what I astonishingly learnt and felt is the beauty, the origin and the strength of nature. Being inspired by roots that structured up the pathways, the routes, the directions in the massive jungle, hold strongly of the ground, yet creates the very basic and strong foundation of the nature.
Day 3:
We were freed from doing any studies or academic activities today. It was totally a FREE-DAY for us to travel around Georgetown, where the city our hotel situated in.
Given the task by selecting a beach or water sport activity, we are to design a life guard post for the purpose of monitoring or guarding. In short, we call it as a BAY WATCH TOWER, which provides functions of observing, resting, eating etc. Besides, furniture and equipment must fit and be incorperated with the spatial planning.
During the site visit, we had actually been divided into 2 main groups of A and B, provided that Site A refers to beach side, whereas Site B refers to lake side. Hence, the case study has been spilt into 2 distinctive locations in the site, each group of people studies according to respective site given and job scopes distributed. Jasmine and I were involved in Site A case study and therefore, we were required to design a bay watch tower in our site too. Given the location plan of size 100m x 200m spans in length x width from the seaside, we were to design a 3m x 3m x 3m cube volume of the tower.
In the starting of developing ideas for the tower design, some in-class exercises had been carried out. We were to produce 4 chosen photographs taken on site, 4 abstract sketches extracted from the photographs and also 4 representational 6cm x 6cm x 6cm cube volum models of each photograph.
In idea developing stages, we had came out with rexpective initial ideas before combined and used in designing.
This was really an interesting design project that allowed me to have fun initiating ideas, designing ideas and creating models with my friend. Learning is not only about individuality, but the experiences and also the knowledge shared wit colleagues. Upon the completion of this project, we are able to generate form and space of bay watch tower through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on exploring the user requirement and simple spatial organization skills and site responding to develop an architectural proposition.
Concept:
ORIGIN, generated from the inspiration of roots.
Believe in everything in nature comes with origin.
Nature is the root, the origin of earth.
