PRECEDENT STUDIES

PRE-PROJECT 2B | DESIGN PROPOSAL (INDIVIDUAL)

This part required us to come out with our initial design ideas and concept as the first step in developing our final design of Nature Appreciation Centre (NAC). From the information gathered through the part 1 assignment (site analysis), tracing the local context response of the  site, mapping it over a series of significant stages in the course of its background and culture, I were to generate the initial ideas and concept. Given the task that I was to produce my personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches, in responding with the inspiration experienced in Belum Rainforest, for a contemporary idea that connects directly with the past and current local environment, history, culture and community of the site.

“There are never-ending panoramas to witness and activities to participate in, at Banding Island, and as you witness the diversity of the flora and fauna unique to Belum, you’ll understand and better appreciate its significance in the country’s nature...” - stated the developer.

PRE-PROJECT 2B | INTERIM  (INDIVIDUAL)

Before the final submission and presentation, interim had been conducted a month in advanced to showcase our final design concept and ideas. For this stage, I had already finalised my concept and building form.

During the presentation, I was critted by Mr Alvin Lim and Ms Norita. Feedbacks and comments given were to improve some detail considerations for construction wise, also the sustainability of my proposed NAC.

INTERIM MODEL  |  PRESENTATION

This is the final project that calls for a design of a simply public building (NAC) with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events and variety of strategies for sustainable design. In designing the NAC, I were to explore design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability with a specific community of users. Moreover, I were to explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact, utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach. Thence, my design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, meantime provide the best of experiences for the users.

An "Experimental space" ...taking into account the considerations of user, context, function and experience......

Upon the completion of this project, I am able to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design, eantime to eet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with the buildings. After gone through pre-design processes where include the production of design proposal, interim presentation, tutorial progression check and my progresive work-out and development, I was able to understand the site thoroughly and then to have my NAC successfully designed.

Concept:

Reconnection with Nature.

THE IDEA OF RECONNECTING HUMAN WITH NATURE THROUGH ARCHITECTURE.

Integrating nature into architecture of NAC, where

allowing plants to grow along with the building facade.

In reconnecting human with nature,

"Openness" has been emphasised in the architecture construction.

More opened than enclosed, no restricted views from all sides,

closed body contact with plants -

gives the essence of being just "one-step" in-and-out,

where such poetic and tactile spaces are planned.

PROJECT 2B | NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE

After the final crit presentation was held, I have received some good comments as well as some suggestions to improve on my overall works. First and foremost, the crit was happy with my concept generated. Simple yet sufficient and well enough to relate and communicate with the local context. Some suggestions on how to enhance my drawings visual presentation in order to well portray my NAC concept had been taught. I am glad that I have learnt something out of this presentation that will lead to my further improvement in the coming projects. Big thanks to the crit and definitely my tutor who helped me a lot thoughout this module.
