“What is one doing when one is doing architecture?” (Simon Unwin, 2014)

This project attempts to convey an understanding of architect’s architectural theory through a direct observation and analysis of his/her buildings. Using architecture as primary text, this project claims that the world of form is not arbitrary but displays an internal logic that has the capacity to convey meaning. Analytical illustrations are used extensively to reveal the conceptual and experiential order of the architecture. It will support students’ learning since doing architecture can be developed by studying the work of others.

Project 1 Part 1|ANALYSING SELF

STAGE 1

In this first stage project, Lim Shu Yin, Liong Lee Yee and me were in a group and we have selected "Klang Central" as our site and see it "through the eyes" of one architect, urban designer or theoretician. We have selected Dolores Hayden who is an American architect, professor, urban historian, author and poet. The featured theory through her written book - The Power of Place: Urban Landscape as Public History.

PROPOSAL

STAGE 2

In this stage, we were asked to apply or translate design theories and historic urban design approaches onto this area. Imagine how the architect or urban designer may have analysed and interpreted in this chosen area. The application or translation should primarily happen through a graphical language or sketch design. Select a medium and style that is appropriate for the chosen architect or urban designer. This should be accompanied by short reflective text of 500 words.

In stage 2, individual work comes in. I have to analyse the theories in relation to "Klang Central" based on my own interpretation and understanding, meantime to produce an approximately 500-word reflective text, complimentary with sketches and drawings.
