Given this task is to select 2 to 3 ongoing construction site which visibly covers most of subject topics covered in the syllabus. We had selected an office-bangalow project in Bangsar (Site A) and Semi-D project in Alam Suria, Sunway.

Through visiting to construction sites, we are able to identify different types of building elements and its construction process, details and materials. We had studied and recorded construction of different building elements, for instance, roof, foundation, superstructure, etc. In specific, we learnt how to apply these knowledge in the details of building construction drawing that we had done in the construction report, provided a reflecting on understanding towards construction itself.

The report consists of documents (visual images, annotated sketches and drawings) related to the contruction process, methods, materials and site context of our sites studied. Construction details been analysed through:

  • Specification of material used in construction

  • Dimensions and sizesof components

  • Standards of descriptions

  • Procedures of constructing the components

  • Construction response to site context (environmental issues related to sustainable development)

PRE-PROJECT 1 | VISIT TO CONSTRUCTION SITES

In a group of 7 people which consisted of Chan Jasmine, Kong Chee Seng (Joseph), Kristopher Teoh, Lim Shu Yin, Lim Wei Ze (Nick), Nicole Lim and me, we had gone to 2 construction site which the first one is located in Bangsar, an office-bangalow project, incharged by one of my groupmates' dad (Shu Yin) and the other one in Sunway Alam Suria, a Semi-D residential project.

In a car of I driving, we all went to the site altogether. We were guided by Mr. Lim, the project manager. The overall visit was really a great learning experience for us, as this was the very first time for us to get into a construction site, yet be able to experience and observe how the works and progress were going in a construction site.

From climbing up to the rooftop to observe the roof system, till to the basement to discover how and what type of foundation should be used, we got to exprience and learn a lot of things an details from the site, under Mr. Lim's guidance.

Before going to the site, we had actually divided the tasks to be done by every each pair of us. We divided ourselves into 3 main groups so as each group to study each main topic: Roof, superstructure and substructure (foundation).

Roof                                : Shu Yin

Superstructure           : Nick and me

Substructure               : Joseph and Kristopher

Safety & Machinery   : Chan Jasmine

External Works           : Nicole Lim

Lesson learnt from Mr. Lim (Project Manager)'s Philosophy:

"Pre-aim problems in construction during design..."

  • always do sample for approval

  • communicate with workers

  • listen to feedbacks

  • see critical area
