Klang is one of the oldest town in Selangor. The importance of Klang elevated in 19th century due to the rapid expansion of tin mining activities in Klang Valley.
After 1874, the British opted for Klang over Jugra as the centre of their administration, and this remained until 1880 when they moved it to the mining centre of Kuala Lumpur. Despite the transition, Klang did not lose its greatness, and remained renown with the construction of Port Kalng (formerly known as Port Swettenham) in 1901,
which made the royal town the chief outlet for Selangor’s tin. In addition, its position was enhanced in 1886 by the Klang Valley railway.
In the 1980’s the town’s growth was further stimulated by the State becoming a leading producer of coffee and rubber.
Today, many major developments are taking place in Klang thus changing further its current conditions in term of urban layout and architecture.
Without proper documentation of what was there, future generations might not know the city; its origin and development. Therefore, this project attempts to document Klang through report and analysis.
PART 1 | ESSAY
In the first part of the project, we were given a task in a group of 4 to provide a building inventory essay. My group members for this project were Chan Jasmine, Cynthia Lee and Liong Lee Yee (Jessie). We had selected Convent School Klang and studied the function of the building type to serve the community within its vicinity. From our observations on site, we had identified the different architectural elements (exterior and interior) that have been adapted to Jalan Tengku Kelana, where the school locates. yet to best serve the practical and functional needs of the local community as compared to the similar building type found in another region. How has local technology, materials, climatic conditions, history, culture and beliefs influenced the design of this building? Conduct interviews, library research, photography, sketches and drawings had been carried to reord our findings.
Upon the completion of this essay report, what I have learnt is I am able to Interpret architectural language in relation to the development of Western architecture between Industrial Revolution and post World War 2.
I am a Klang citizen, nonetheless, through completing this project, I had understand and discovered more about the historical heritage in Klang. Although I was not a student of Convent, yet now I managed to read the school's historical importance, identify the prominant architectual elements in responding the site context. How the school responds to the site and vice versa.
Other than on the one street, we had also gone to some streets alongward to explore. The very historical district in Klang is mainly surrounded in Port Klang (South). Although many historical buildings are still exist on site, but as what we observed, interviewed and studied, not much intention and conservation effort has actually putting towards those traditional shophouses and old buildings. Population wise are majority of eldery.

We had actually gone to Convent school for 2 times. However, we were back in empty-booklet. The school does not really has a proper system to keep their history records in condition. So when we were demanding to have a look on any record or book, they could not even provide us a proper source. As told, only there is 2 records of history are kept in the principal's room.
So when we had actually made appointments to pay visits to the school on both day, the staff that promised to be present was always not there to guide and help us. Therefore, what we managed to do and get on-site visit was only taking some photographs of the building.

The day when we visited to Convent school, one of the girl schools in Klang.
After the visit, we had gone to Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh Restaurant to have our lunch. It is the most significant cuisine of the Chinese population having everyday as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It is the most famous bak kut teh rated as it serves as the creator of Bak Kut Teh in the world! The first Bak Kut Teh is created from this owner's precedents.
